Today’s most notable development for Alibaba is its plan to update the existing “Tongyi” app on iOS and Android and rebrand it as “Qianwen,” aligning it with the company’s flagship AI model. Over the coming months, Alibaba will introduce agentic AI capabilities to support shopping across core platforms such as Taobao—bringing the product experience closer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This marks a critical milestone in Alibaba’s effort to narrow its consumer-facing AI gap with China domestic competitors and eventually monetize personal-use scenarios.

That said, the most straightforward monetization path for Alibaba in China’s AI market remains Alibaba Cloud’s GPU leasing and broader cloud-infrastructure services. Our latest round of channel checks, industry-expert interviews, and ecosystem-partner discussions yields the following conclusions:

Continued Revenue Acceleration for Alibaba Cloud, With Strong Momentum Into Next Quarter

Growth

Based on inputs from industry experts, channel partners, and ecosystem participants, Alibaba Cloud’s YoY growth should improve by at least 6ppt this quarter (non-financial-statement basis—reasons have been discussed in our previous analysis).

Revenue Mix

Internal and external revenue contributions are expanding at a similar pace. Current checks indicate that Alibaba Cloud has a strong probability of sustaining its acceleration into CY25Q4.

Profitability

Consistent with last quarter, EBITA margin shows modest improvement. As management reiterated during prior earnings calls, the strategic priority this year remains “market share expansion”, not margin optimization.
