At the OFC 2026 Technology Innovation Briefing, Coherent CEO Jim Anderson stated, “this is probably the best time ever in the history of optical communications.” The company’s technology roadmap and product timelines support this view with clear product catalysts.

$50B Base Business + $20B Incremental Market

Management divides the business into two segments. Existing growth engines, including pluggable transceivers, DCI transceivers, transport equipment, and optical components, address a $50B+ SAM. Additionally, four new growth vectors represent over $20B in incremental SAM, each with higher gross margins than the current portfolio.

The revenue timeline for the four new vectors is clear: OCS is already shipping, CPO/NPO ramps in H2 2026, Multi-Rail ships in H1 2027, and Thermal Solutions begin contributing revenue in H2 2027.

OCS: SAM Revised Up from $2B to $4B

OCS SAM has increased from $2B to $4B in one year (Source: Cignal AI + internal estimates), primarily due to expanded use cases. In addition to replacing traditional spine-leaf switches, OCS enables software-defined topology reconfiguration in AI training environments. It allows optical paths to be reconfigured via software commands, eliminating the need for physical re-cabling, and supports xPU utilization optimization and system resiliency through fail-over.

Coherent’s OCS uses Liquid Crystal Technology, requiring drive voltages of approximately 10V, compared to 100-200V for competing MEMS-based solutions. This approach has no moving parts or high-voltage components and has been proven in subsea applications for decades, offering significantly higher reliability.

Currently, Coherent is shipping 64 x 64 and 320 x 320 systems to over 10 customers, with a 512 x 512 system in development. OCS is already generating revenue.

CPO: $15B+ SAM with Full In-House Supply Chain

CPO represents the largest incremental opportunity, with SAM projected at over $15B by 2030 (Source: LightCounting + internal estimates). Coherent differentiates itself by covering the entire CPO bill of materials internally, including Silicon Photonics PIC, VCSEL lasers, optical engines, External Laser Source (ELS), Isolators, Thermoelectric Coolers (TEC), Prism Micro Lens Arrays, and Polarization-Maintaining Fiber.

CPO is driven by the need for greater power efficiency and bandwidth. As data rates increase, optical interconnects use less power than copper, even over short distances. While scale-up networks are currently all copper, this is expected to change.

Coherent demonstrated three parallel technology paths at OFC 2026:

  • Silicon Photonics-based CPO, 6.4 Tbps

  • VCSEL-based CPO/NPO, power roadmap targeting 1 pJ/bit, 4-5X lower than Silicon Photonics

  • Industry-first InP-based CPO engine with integrated Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA)

Revenue timeline: Scale-Out CPO ramps in H2 2026, followed by Scale-Up CPO in H2 2027.
